The New Zealand government released data on Thursday 16th of this month showing that the number of adults who smoke daily has dropped from 9.4% last year to 8%, the lowest level ever recorded. New Zealand now has one of the lowest smoking rates in the world. Based on current trends, New Zealand is on track to reach the country's earlier goal of being smoke-free by 2025.

The number of smokers in New Zealand has fallen by 56,000 in the past year and the current smoking rate is now half of what it was 10 years ago. It is worth noting that there has been a significant increase in the number of people using new non-combustible smoking alternatives such as e-cigarettes on a daily basis, rising from 6.2% last year to 8.3%. The Guardian's analysis suggests that New Zealand's smoking rate is estimated to have reached a new low because many smokers have switched to new non-combustible smoking alternatives, such as e-cigarettes.
