Officials from West Yorkshire Trading Standards and Kirklees city center team seized over 3000 illegally traded electronic cigarettes worth £40,000 and 77420 cigarettes in raids in Dewsbury and Huddersfield.

On July 18th and August 8th, raids were conducted in multiple shops across two towns resulting in the seizure of 235 bags of 50-gram hand-rolled cigarettes, 80 counterfeit perfumes, and 38 counterfeit clothing items.

The illegal sales of electronic cigarettes in these two towns have recently increased significantly, prompting police action.

According to Sergeant Amanda Holroyd, "Our team, along with officials from the West Yorkshire Trading Standards, confiscated illegal and counterfeit goods worth tens of thousands of pounds from the streets of Kirklees. This was a very significant seizure. We know that the profits from the sale of such goods are often used to fund organized crime, so we must do all we can to cut off the source of funding for serious crime.

After confiscating the items, our colleagues are still following up on the investigation related to organized criminal activities and illegal product sales. Anyone with relevant information is urged to contact us.

The trading standards manager for West Yorkshire, Linda Davies, has issued a warning about the dangers of illegal products, particularly when it comes to sales to minors. Davies stated that "the illegal trade of tobacco products makes it easier for children to start smoking and helps fund organized crime. We always remind the public of the negative impact illegal tobacco trade has on health, the economy, and society, including its links to human trafficking and various types of organized crime. Our team continues to work closely with West Yorkshire Police to combat this illegal activity, and we thank residents for their support in reporting these sales.

France’s National Assembly Finance Committee voted to oppose the government’s plan in Article 23 of the 2026 budget bill to tax vaping products at €0.30/10mL for low-nicotine liquids and €0.50/10mL for others (with typical bottles priced €5–€7). Lawmakers arguing against the tax said vaping is less harmful than combustible cigarettes and can aid cessation; others warned of a gateway effect for youth and sustained nicotine dependence.
