Strict "Smoke-Free Movement" Policy Implemented in Cambodia's Sports Sector

Cambodia's Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports will release a strict "smoke-free sports" policy, banning smoking in sports facilities.

According to a report by Cambodian media outlet Phnompenhpost on January 10th, the Ministry of Education, Youth, and Sports in Cambodia is set to launch a stringent "no-smoking campaign" policy.

An anonymous Cambodian sports official stated, "I am aware that smoking is detrimental to my health and those around me, but if I don't smoke, I feel uneasy, as if there is a bitter taste in my mouth. I only feel relaxed when I smoke." However, he emphasized that he will make an effort to distance himself from others who smoke in order to ensure it does not affect them.

The new "Smoke-Free Sports" policy will prohibit smoking in athletes' residences, training fields, spectator areas, and venues, as well as the distribution of all types of cigarettes. The policy aims to encourage everyone involved in sports activities to refrain from posting any images related to smoking, cigarette distribution, or tobacco product promotion.

Cambodia's Minister of School Sports and Student Affairs, Hang Chuon, unveiled the guidelines for the "Smoke-Free Sports" campaign on December 27, 2023, with a widespread release taking place on January 4, 2024.

Hang Chun, the Minister of Education, pointed out that "the implementation of this policy aims to promote a smoke-free sports culture, maximize competitiveness, and prevent health issues for athletes, organizers, and spectators caused by smoking.

In addition, the guidelines also prohibit the sale, distribution, and advertisement of tobacco products in the athletes' residences, training areas, competition venues, spectator areas, and sports stadiums. All sports leagues and clubs are required to incorporate the "Smoke-Free Sports" policy into their regulations.
