Study Shows Increase in Teenage E-cigarette Use in the Netherlands
Dutch teenagers' e-cigarette use surges, with up to 30% trying it and 10% using weekly, study finds.

According to a report from Newsy today on February 17th, a recent study by Independer showed that the rate of e-cigarette use among teenagers in the Netherlands is increasing. Approximately 30% of students in grades two and four of secondary school have tried e-cigarettes, with nearly 10% using them at least once a week. This habit is predominantly seen among children aged 12 to 15 years old.


According to data from the Dutch National Institute for Public Health and Environment (RIVM) and Municipal Health Service (GGD), the frequency of e-cigarette use among teenagers has skyrocketed by 405.6% over the past four years. In the Gooi en Vechtstreek region, the increase is highest, reaching 671.4%. Even in the Amsterdam region, where the increase is smaller, the usage has doubled.


Within the municipality, the province of Zeeland has the highest rate of e-cigarette use among adolescents in Schouwen-Duiveland, with 18.3% of students using e-cigarettes weekly. In northern Netherlands, Diemen, Beverwijk, and Amstelveen have comparatively lower rates of use.
