The Tempe City Council in Arizona is advancing a proposal aimed at reducing the number of young people who smoke or use e-cigarettes. The updated version of the proposal is set to be discussed at two public meetings next week, and includes provisions for a tobacco sales permit, fees to ensure compliance, and raising the minimum age for tobacco purchases to 21. Retailers who repeatedly sell tobacco products to minors will face license revocation.
The Tempe City Council will hold a virtual meeting on March 20 at noon, followed by an in-person meeting at the Tempe Public Library (3500 S. Rural Road) at 6 p.m. later that day.
In addition, from March 20th to April 3rd, a survey will be conducted on tempe.gov/forum to gather public feedback on the proposal.
Currently, Arizona is one of the ten states without statewide registration, allowing tobacco retailers to continue operating even after selling tobacco products to minors. The Tempe City Council hopes to strengthen regulation of tobacco sales and curb the trend of underage smoking through this proposal.
If the proposal is passed, Tempe will join other cities such as Flagstaff and Tucson who have already enacted tobacco retail permit regulations and have raised the minimum age to 21 in compliance with the 2019 federal legislation.
