The Emerging Health Risks of E-cigarette and HNB Tobacco
Vietnam Public Health University President Dr. Hoàng Văn Minh shared latest research on youth e-cigarette and HNB tobacco use.

According to a recent report by Vietnamese media VnExpress, Professor Hoàng Văn Minh, President of the Vietnam Public Health University, shared the latest research findings at a symposium on "New Tobacco Harm Prevention and Control: Exchange of Scientific Evidence and Global Experience" held in Hanoi.

The research findings from Professor Huang Wenming show that between October and December 2023, his research team surveyed 3801 students from grades six to twelve in 11 provinces and cities in Vietnam. The results revealed that 14% of students had tried e-cigarettes, with 7% using them in the past 30 days. As for the use of HNB tobacco, 1.8% of students had tried it and 1% were still using it in the past 30 days.

Research also shows that 10.6% of students believe that e-cigarettes are harmless or less harmful than traditional tobacco. At the same time, 3% of students hold the same view about HNB tobacco. Professor Huang pointed out that many people misunderstand or overlook the potential risks of using e-cigarettes and HNB tobacco. He emphasized that, in addition to nicotine in tobacco, the aerosol components in e-cigarettes and HNB tobacco may also pose health risks. While some spices are safe when ingested through the digestive system, they may be harmful when inhaled through the respiratory system. Additionally, aerosols may contain heavy metals and other impurities, further increasing health risks.

Experts also stated that the fashionable appearance, rich flavors, and carefully crafted advertising campaigns of e-cigarettes and heated tobacco products (HNB) have led many, especially young people, to mistakenly believe that these products are safer than traditional tobacco. Professor Huang called for immediate action to be taken to establish and implement strict regulatory policies.
