UK Government Launches 10-Year Study on e-cigarette Effects on Children
The UK government to launch a 10-year study on the long-term effects of e-cigarettes on children under 8.

According to a Reuters report on February 19th, the UK government will launch a ten-year study to investigate the long-term effects of e-cigarettes on the health and behavior of children under 8 years old.


The Ministry of Health stated that the long-term health effects of teenagers using e-cigarettes are not fully understood, and this comprehensive study will provide the most detailed picture to date. The study, expected to cost £62 million ($78.1 million), will follow 100,000 participants aged 8 to 18 over a period of 10 years, collecting data on their behavior, biology, and health records.


The UK government plans to introduce a uniform tax on e-cigarette liquid starting from October next year, stating that this research will provide the necessary evidence for researchers and policymakers to protect the next generation from potential health risks.


The UK government has launched a nationwide e-cigarette promotional campaign, engaging directly with young people through social media and influencers.

Alaska Attorney General Stephen J. Cox has sent notices to more than 1,500 tobacco retailers and distributors warning them against selling vape and nicotine pouch products that lack authorization from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). According to the Alaska Department of Law, businesses were advised to verify products against FDA authorization databases and avoid selling unauthorized nicotine products. The action highlights how state-level enforcement is increasingly extending federal product authorization requirements to retail channels.

Gallup’s 2026 Consumption Habits survey tracked nicotine pouch use for the first time. The survey found that 11% of U.S. adults reported smoking cigarettes in the past week, 9% reported vaping, and 4% reported using nicotine pouches. European Ombudswoman Teresa Anjinho has opened an inquiry into how the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Trade handles interactions with the tobacco industry. According to Ukrainska Pravda, Russian strikes on the Kyiv region during the night of Aug. 4-5, 2026, damaged warehouses storing products of Japan Tobacco International (JTI) and Imperial Brands Ukraine. JTI said a finished goods warehouse in Kyiv Oblast was destroyed, with no employees injured, and that it did not expect disruptions to retail supplies. Imperial Brands Ukraine said products stored at warehouses of distributors and retail partners were affected and estimated losses from the strikes at “tens of millions of Ukrainian hryvnias” (roughly hundreds of thousands of U.S. dollars).

U.S. technology and investigative publication WIRED has examined how nicotine analogs are emerging as a new challenge for the country’s vape regulatory framework. The article argues that after the U.S. expanded federal oversight of nicotine products in 2022, some manufacturers began using nicotine-like compounds such as 6-methyl-nicotine that may fall outside existing definitions. Researchers cited by WIRED said some nicotine analogs could be more potent than traditional nicotine, although human health impacts remain unclear. U.S. policymakers are considering broader definitions of nicotine to bring these compounds under federal oversight.
