Unsafe E-Cigarette" Campaign to Promote Smoke-Free Korea
South Korea to launch anti-e-cigarette ads to raise awareness on dangers of vaping, targeting users and society.

According to Asiatime and reported on October 9th, the South Korean Ministry of Health and Welfare (Health Ministry) and the Korea Health Promotion Institute announced that starting on the 10th of this month, they will launch anti-smoking advertisements titled "Unsafa e-cigarettes" through various media outlets for approximately three months.


This anti-smoking advertisement aims to criticize society's lenient attitude towards e-cigarettes and raise awareness among e-cigarette users.


The Ministry of Health plans to launch anti-smoking advertisements on various platforms, including terrestrial television, social networking services (SNS), radio, online, and outdoor media, from October 10 to December 31.


The Director of the Health Policy Bureau, Bae Kyung-tak, stated that


South Korea is a signatory to the World Health Organization's Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC), and the foundation of its tobacco control policy is the principle that "all tobacco is harmful." Through this advertisement, we plan to widely publicize the dangers of e-cigarettes and make efforts to achieve a smoke-free South Korea.

This advertisement aims to correct the misconceptions about e-cigarettes caused by the marketing of the tobacco industry, and to address the social issues that arise from this. We hope that this advertisement will serve as an opportunity for e-cigarette users to quit smoking.

New York’s 75% Wholesale Tax on Nicotine Pouches Takes Effect Sept. 1, With Aug. 31 Inventory Subject to Floor Tax
New York State will extend its tobacco products tax to “alternative nicotine products,” including tobacco-free nicotine pouches, from September 1, 2026, at a rate of 75% of the wholesale price. Distributors, wholesalers and retailers must also inventory products held as of 11:59 p.m. on August 31 and pay a floor tax. Vapor products are excluded from the new category and remain subject to New York's separate 20% supplemental sales tax on the retail price.

Australian Coalition Taskforce Calls for 80% Tobacco Tax Cut to Combat Illicit Market
According to SGST on August 26, 2026, Australia’s Coalition Illegal Tobacco Taskforce released a report recommending an up to 80% cut in tobacco excise to reduce the appeal of the illicit tobacco market. The report claimed organised crime groups now control about 80% of Australia’s tobacco market and argued that high excise rates have widened the price gap between legal and illegal products. The recommendation remains a policy proposal and has not been adopted by the Australian government, which said its focus remains on enforcement, compliance and additional resources.

European Ombudswoman Teresa Anjinho has opened an inquiry into how the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Trade handles interactions with the tobacco industry. The case follows a complaint from a civil society organisation that alleges regular, unnecessary and non-transparent contacts between DG TRADE and tobacco industry representatives, raising questions over compliance with the EU’s obligations under the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control. U.S. technology and investigative publication WIRED has examined how nicotine analogs are emerging as a new challenge for the country’s vape regulatory framework. The article argues that after the U.S. expanded federal oversight of nicotine products in 2022, some manufacturers began using nicotine-like compounds such as 6-methyl-nicotine that may fall outside existing definitions. Researchers cited by WIRED said some nicotine analogs could be more potent than traditional nicotine, although human health impacts remain unclear. From Nicotine Salts to Cocrystals: China’s Shenzhen Huabao institute explores a more stable form for sustained nicotine release
China-based Shenzhen Huabao Collaborative Innovation Technology Research Institute Co., Ltd. has filed a patent application for a nicotine-ascorbic acid cocrystal, exploring a new solid-state form of nicotine. The patent proposes applications across e-liquids, heated tobacco sticks, oral tobacco, chewing tobacco and snuff. In nicotine pouch tests disclosed in the filing, cocrystal formulations showed less than a 6% decline in nicotine content after three months of accelerated storage and a release profile combining early-stage release with sustained delivery over 60 minutes. The filing reflects exploration of nicotine forms beyond conventional nicotine base and nicotine salts.
