Walker County Schools Receive Funding from JUUL Settlement for Anti-Smoking Initiatives
A $5.8 million settlement with JUUL will fund anti-vaping programs in Wake County Schools, including health education and scholarships.

Recently, according to WTVD TV station, residents of Wake County, North Carolina, learned for the first time how the Wake County public school system plans to use the funds obtained from a recent settlement with e-cigarette manufacturer JUUL.

In 2023, Walker County Schools received $5.8 million as part of a collective lawsuit against e-cigarette companies. A plan proposed this Tuesday will fund eight new projects aimed at controlling student smoking and tobacco use in the district, as well as providing resources for students and staff who are already addicted.

These plans include implementing a new health education curriculum, hiring staff trained in medicine to join the district, providing support services for students and faculty members who already have addiction issues, and funding activities against tobacco and e-cigarette use. The district also plans to establish a scholarship program annually for 10 students who demonstrate a commitment to combating youth smoking within the academic community.
