According to NS News, the West Vancouver area of Canada is planning to prohibit the establishment of standalone e-cigarette shops within the jurisdiction.
Recently, the city council added a clause to the zoning bylaws aimed at restricting specific commercial activities related to e-cigarette shops in the Ambleside and Dundarave business districts.
The restriction primarily targets independent e-cigarette shops – retail stores that mainly sell electronic nicotine or e-cigarettes. The council is proposing to ban the existence of such shops in any location within the West Vancouver area. However, shops of this kind will still be allowed to operate if the sale of e-cigarette products is only a supplementary or secondary part of their business activities, such as convenience stores or cannabis shops. Currently, there are no e-cigarette shops operating in the area.
Meanwhile, in nearby North Vancouver, the situation is completely different. E-cigarette shops in the area are only required to comply with provincial and federal regulations, including not selling to minors, in order to operate as a retail format. These shops are mandated to use frosted glass and display products in windows that are not easily accessible to minors, similar to regulations seen in marijuana shops.
The proposal in West Vancouver is a supplement to the restrictions previously proposed by the council, and a public hearing for these zoning changes will be held on May 6th.
