York City Council votes to restrict e-cigarette shops from being located near schools

Sep.16.2025
UK’s York Council met Sept 16 to vote on a proposal limiting new e-cig/tobacco shop spots. It bans such shops within 500ft of schools, churches or similar businesses, bars unaccompanied minors from entering/working there, and forbids food sales. Apr 2025: Police checked 16 shops, found 4 violations. The proposal aims to reduce minors’ access. Some residents backed it, saying it should restrict near-school shops but protect adults’ choice.

Key points:

·Core proposal terms: Restricting the location selection of new e-cigarette and tobacco shops in York City, prohibiting them from being within 500 feet of schools and similar establishments, regulating access for minors, and prohibiting the sale of food in these shops.

·Background of the proposal: Previously, there were shops selling related products to minors. In April 2025, as part of the "e-cigarette crackdown operation," the police inspected 16 shops, with 4 found to be in violation. The proposal aims to reduce minors' exposure to these products.

·Public opinion: Some members of the public support the proposal, agreeing with the restrictions on shops near schools, as long as it does not affect the purchasing choices of adults. Residents with e-cigarette habits also support protecting minors.

·Key timeline: The York City Council will vote on the proposal on September 16th.

York City Council in the UK voted on Tuesday on a proposal that would restrict the locations where new e-cigarette and tobacco shops can be opened in the city, as reported by WGAL on September 15th.

The proposal specifies that such establishments cannot be located within 500 feet of schools, churches, daycare centers, libraries, or other e-cigarette shops, tobacco shops. The proposal also stipulates that minors cannot enter any of these establishments without a parent or legal guardian present, and they cannot be employed at any tobacco shops, e-cigarette shops, or cigarette retail outlets. Additionally, these shops are prohibited from selling food.

According to city government documents, there have been multiple incidents in the past where stores have sold related products to minors. In April 2025, law enforcement conducted an operation called "Operation Vapedown" to inspect 16 related stores in the city, and found that 4 of them were selling products to minors. The city government documents state that the core purpose of this proposal is to reduce opportunities for minors to access such products.

Some residents of downtown York expressed their support for the proposal, as long as adults are still able to make their own choices about purchasing related products. In particular, there was strong public support for the provision that would restrict the opening of these types of stores near schools.

Regarding the restrictions around schools, I definitely think it's a good idea. Kids are attracted to these shops, and we all know it's not good for them. I believe kids shouldn't be exposed to these things. As we often say, let them make their own decisions when they are older," said York City resident Dylan Seiple, who has a habit of vaping e-cigarettes.

The York City Council meeting was held on September 16th.
