2022 World Tobacco Development Report: Emerging Nicotine Pouch Trend
The report on the global tobacco industry in 2022 highlights the rapid growth of nicotine pouches and stable sales of traditional smokeless tobacco.

Recently, the Oriental Tobacco Report released an article titled "2022 Global Tobacco Development Report (Part I)," written by the Policy Research Office of the National Bureau of Economic Research.


The article mentions that nicotine pouches, also known as modern oral tobacco, are the fastest-growing new tobacco product in recent years. Sales are expected to reach 10.65 billion pouches in 2022, a 56.1% increase from the previous year, with a sales revenue of 5.33 billion US dollars, a 77.7% increase. However, their market share in the global tobacco product sales is still less than 1%, with the main markets concentrated in the United States and the Nordic region, such as Sweden, Norway, and Denmark.


Sales of traditional cigarettes remained stable, with a total sales volume of 121,000 tons and revenue of $13.95 billion. Hand-rolled and pipe tobacco maintained slow growth, with respective sales volumes of 104,000 tons (equivalent to 2.958 million boxes of cigarettes) and 146,000 tons, a year-on-year increase of 1.9% and 2.5%. Revenue for hand-rolled and pipe tobacco reached $34.39 billion and $7.93 billion, respectively, a year-on-year growth of 6.6% and 8.7%.

China-based Shenzhen Huabao Collaborative Innovation Technology Research Institute Co., Ltd. has filed a patent application for a nicotine-ascorbic acid cocrystal, exploring a new solid-state form of nicotine.
