According to a report by WGNA on January 4, the New York State Police have made arrests at the beginning of the new year, targeting individuals suspected of selling flavored e-cigarette products to minors.
According to official sources in New York State, a week-long operation called "Smoke" was conducted prior to the new year. This operation took place in Onondaga County and was led by a special task force comprised of tactical officers from violent gangs and drug units, as well as uniformed police officers. The operation was initiated in response to reports from the local school district about an increasing trend of student usage of e-cigarettes. Selling nicotine or tobacco products to individuals under the age of 21 is strictly prohibited in New York.
In response to this issue, state police are collaborating with local law enforcement agencies to make concerted efforts in reducing the phenomenon of teenagers buying e-cigarettes.
Of the six convenience stores inspected, three were found to be in compliance, while the remaining three stores and their respective salespersons were found to be unable to adhere to regulations, therefore they will face penalties.
According to the state police department of Artonida, the following individuals and their respective business locations were arrested and found to be in violation during this operation.
Local and community leaders have praised the state police and other law enforcement agencies for their staunch commitment and vigilance in safeguarding the youth. In New York State, individuals must be at least 21 years old to purchase any tobacco or nicotine products.
