Brazilian Senate to vote on e-cigarette regulation bill on 20th
Brazilian Senate's Economic Affairs Committee to vote on e-cigarette regulation bill PL 5.008/2023 on August 20, amid controversy and debate.

According to Sbt News on August 19th, the Brazilian Senate's Economic Affairs Committee (CAE) is expected to vote on a bill regulating e-cigarettes (PL 5.008/2023) this Tuesday, August 20th. The meeting agenda for this bill is scheduled to begin at 10:00 am on that day.

During the first half of this year, senators tried multiple times to vote on this bill, but were unsuccessful in moving it forward due to divisions among the senators.

The bill was proposed by Senator Soraya Thronicke and was originally scheduled for discussion on July 9th. However, at the request of Senator Mecias de Jesus, the agenda has been postponed until August 20th in order to allow more time for discussion on the topic.

On the 13th, a special session of the Senate was held to debate the issue. Supporters argued that regulating e-cigarettes could potentially bring in 2.2 billion reais in tax revenue annually. However, opponents expressed concerns that this product could put additional financial pressure on the national health system (SUS).

The bill's rapporteur, Senator Eduardo Gomes, has expressed support for the bill and has proposed some amendments. As of now, a formal vote has not been taken.
