According to Brazilian media outlet Metropoles, the country's largest tobacco company has now openly expressed its support for a bill proposed by MP Soraya Thronicke, aiming to regulate the sale and usage of e-cigarettes.
The support statement was issued by the Brazilian Tobacco Industry Association (Abifumo), representing the interests of companies such as PMI (Philip Morris), Souza Cruz, and JTI. The Brazilian Health Surveillance Agency (Anvisa) has banned the sale, import, and distribution of e-cigarettes in Brazil.
Taronic MP emphasized that the main objective of the bill is to protect public health and especially the health of youth through strict regulations. She also stated that it is necessary to provide legal protection for suppliers and ensure that e-cigarettes are appropriately taxed.
At the end of September 2022, a public hearing was organized by Senator Soraya in the Senate to discuss this issue. Representatives from the tobacco industry as well as opponents of device regulations were present.
The Brazilian Tobacco Industry Association (Abifumo) stated that they only became aware of the bill when it was submitted, and their representatives only encountered Solaya at the public hearing in the Senate.
