Colorado School Districts Receive Funding to Combat Teen E-cigarette Use
Colorado school districts, including D2, D8, D49, and D70, receive funding from state to combat youth e-cigarette use.

According to KOAA NEWS7 on July 17, several school districts in the state of Colorado have recently received special funding support from the state government to address the issue of teenage e-cigarette use. Districts D2, D8, D49, and D70 received over $639,000 in compensation from a settlement with Juul (an e-cigarette manufacturer) to be used for implementing prevention and intervention efforts for teenage e-cigarette use.

According to a report from the Healthy Kids Colorado Survey, 14% of high school students in Pueblo County, Colorado, were found to frequently use e-cigarettes in 2023.

Jamie Montoya-De Smidt, the coordinator of mental health services in D2 school district, revealed that 29% of high school students in the district had used e-cigarette devices last year. "Most of them are high school students, but there are also some middle school and even elementary school students using e-cigarette devices." In order to effectively curb the spread of e-cigarettes on campus, the D2 school district has received over $253,000 in funding support from the state government.

The D8 school district received over $131,000 in funding. Deputy Director Montina Romero stated that 1% of students were found to be using e-cigarettes last year. Currently, the district is establishing a youth committee made up of students to develop prevention plans that teenagers can participate in.
