Controversy over Proposed E-cigarette Tax in Michigan Sparks Debate
Michigan anti-smoking groups actively advocating for e-cigarette state tobacco tax face resistance as legislation may pass in parliament.

According to FOX 2 report, there is currently a push by anti-smoking lobbying groups in Michigan to increase the state tobacco tax on e-cigarettes. However, there has been a growing resistance to this proposal. It is likely to receive majority approval in the legislature.

Michigan state legislator Joe Bellino said, "I fully support the idea of having a discussion on completely removing e-cigarettes from the hands of children." However, incorporating a tax increase into the bill is relatively complex.

Beilino used to own a retail store near the Ohio border in Monroe. He said, "I lost 25% of my business overnight, my store is only 17 miles from the border. They came with beer, soft drinks without a bottle return, they bought gasoline. How much tax revenue did we lose? We lost billions of dollars, I'm not sure if this is the right thing to do."

Bellino and others will be asking the leader of the public health department alliance responsible for pushing for legislation to find another way to protect children from the dangers of smoking, rather than taxing anyone. He said, "I believe that this bill needs some modifications in order for me to cast a 'yes' vote."
