Michigan Considers Legislation for Stricter Tobacco Product Regulation
Michigan may pass legislation granting counties more authority over tobacco sales, including banning flavored products and taxing nicotine e-cigarettes.

According to a report by BridgeMI on April 1st, Michigan state in the United States may be pushing for legislation that would allow county governments to regulate the sale of tobacco products more strictly. This legislation would be the first to ban the sale of all flavored tobacco products, require tobacco retailers to have a business license, and impose taxes on nicotine-containing e-cigarettes.

According to the legislation, the bill will also repeal ineffective penalties for minors in possession of tobacco products.

Dave Hodgkins, legislative assistant for the Michigan Municipal League, stated that organizations representing cities and villages support this legislation. He emphasized the importance of local government control in ensuring a balance of residents' needs, interests, and safety. Each municipality in Michigan is unique, and government closer to the people can better represent their needs and interests. One-size-fits-all policies are not always the best choice, and communities should be given flexibility whenever possible.

Consumer Advocates Warn: Flavour Ban Threatens Public Health Progress
Greek and European e-cigarette advocates oppose the proposed ban on flavored e-cigarettes, warning that it will undermine tobacco control gains and force adult smokers back to cigarettes or the black market. They called on the government to develop a balanced policy, based on scientific evidence, that protects youth as well as safeguards harm-reduction options for adult users.
