According to a report by oaklandcounty115 on March 18th, Minon Jones, CEO of the Making it Count Community Development Company, stated at the Michigan Municipal League Capital Conference in Lansing on March 13th that she will advocate for legislation to restrict the growth of tobacco companies.
Currently, the state Senate is reviewing a series of bills related to tobacco regulation. These bills include:
- Senate Bill 647 will allow local governments to implement regulations on tobacco sales and use;
- Senate Bill 648 will include e-cigarettes in the tax scope;
- Senate Bills 649 and 650 will prohibit the addition of any flavor to tobacco products, including menthol cigarettes and flavored cigars;
- Senate Bills 651 and 652 will regulate the business licenses of tobacco retailers;
- Senate Bill 653 will abolish penalties for underage smoking.
These bills are currently under review by the Regulatory Affairs Committee. The bills are not interrelated, so legislators can choose to vote on each individually. Jones is campaigning for support for the bills by canvassing communities. So far, resolutions have been passed in Ann Arbor, Detroit, Flint, Washtenaw County, Wayne County, and Benton Harbor.
