Dominican Republic Lung and Thoracic Surgical Association condemns e-cigarettes
Dominican Republic medical associations reject claims by ACCE president Diego Pineda that e-cigarettes are a safe alternative for adult smokers.

According to a report by Proceso on October 14th, the Dominican Republic Pulmonology and Thoracic Surgery Association rejected comments made by Diego Pineda, president of the e-cigarette association (ACCE), denying the claim that e-cigarettes are a safe alternative for adults looking to quit smoking.

The association pointed out that nicotine, liquid marijuana, and other carcinogens contained in e-cigarettes have become a hidden danger of disease and death for adolescents and adults in the Dominican Republic. At the same time, the Dominican Hematology and Oncology Society also emphasized that the increase in cases of head and neck cancer in recent years is closely related to the use of e-cigarettes and vaping.

Alfredo Matos Hoepelman, president of the Dominican Association of Pulmonology and Thoracic Surgery, stated that several international scientific organizations have declared that there is not enough scientific evidence to support the use of e-cigarettes as a smoking cessation aid. The organization concluded that there is currently no scientific evidence to suggest that e-cigarettes are safe for consumers.

Medical experts support raising e-cigarette taxes, despite realizing that this may not necessarily significantly reduce consumption. At the same time, they oppose the e-cigarette association's claim that support for the industry is needed, emphasizing that increasing taxes should not be seen as a hindrance to public health measures.
