【2Firsts News Flash】According to a report from First Alert Weather on July 22, the Fort Wayne Fire Department (FWFD) in Indiana, USA stated that on the morning of July 21, an improperly disposed of e-cigarette sparked a residential fire, fortunately causing no injuries or fatalities.
At the time of the incident, two adults and a dog inside the house had safely evacuated before the fire department arrived. Investigators confirmed that the cause of the fire was an improperly disposed of e-cigarette.
A spokesperson from the Allen County Department of Environmental Management (ACDEM) explained that even so-called "disposable" e-cigarettes contain lithium batteries, which if not disposed of properly, could pose a fire hazard. The department holds events every Tuesday from 9:00 to 14:00 for citizens to safely dispose of any lithium or lithium-ion batteries.
For citizens who are unable to participate in the event on Tuesday, the department will be holding another event on October 11, where e-cigarette products will be accepted for recycling at $1 per pound.
