Florida State Legislature to Vote on Limiting Vape Sales to FDA-Approved Products

Florida lawmakers are set to vote on a bill limiting e-cigarette sales to FDA-approved products, risking closure of thousands of stores.

According to the American media outlet Baynews9, the Florida state legislature is about to vote on an important bill. The Senate Bill 1006 and House Bill 1007 will restrict all e-cigarette stores to sell only products approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

There are over 10,000 e-cigarette related businesses in the state of Florida, and advocates for e-cigarette shops say that if these two bills are passed, many stores could be forced to shut down.

Florida Senator Keith Perry criticized the state for leading the nation in the sale of illegal e-cigarette products. Senator Perry stated that the annual sales of illegal e-cigarette products in Florida alone exceed 36 million dollars.

Another group of e-cigarette shop owners opposes the legislation, with Nick Orlando, the chairman of the Florida Smoke-Free Association, stating that these two proposals would harm the interests of shop owners.

"More than 10,000 small businesses may shut down, more than 50,000 Floridians may lose their jobs, and we may see a huge shortfall of approximately $1.2 billion in our economy," Orlando stated.

He also mentioned that the FDA is very strict in approving products.

He has been shuttling back and forth between the state legislature and lawmakers to negotiate compromise solutions. Now, Senate Bill 1006 is poised to be submitted to the Senate Finance Committee for legislative voting. The complementary House Bill 1007 is also heading towards a full vote.
