According to a report from the British Broadcasting Corporation on October 17th, officials from the UK Trading Standards and Greater Manchester Police (GMP) conducted a joint operation in the city centers of Stockport and Eccles. As a result of the operation, an illegal e-cigarette worth £80,000 was seized, leading to the arrest of six individuals involved in the case.
According to a study conducted by the Trade Standards Bureau, the number of young individuals in the town who are using e-cigarettes has more than doubled. Member of Parliament, Frankie Singleton, stated that "Stokeport is no longer a haven for unethical e-cigarette sellers.
While it is good news that our young people are quitting smoking, preventing them from accessing e-cigarettes is evidently a new challenge.
Jilla Burgess-Allen, Director of Public Health for Stoke-on-Trent, stated that e-cigarettes are safer than traditional smoking and can serve as a viable alternative for those trying to quit smoking. However, she emphasized that it is important for individuals who do not smoke to refrain from starting to smoke or use e-cigarettes.
This joint operation is a direct response to the crime report in the downtown area of Stokeport. It aims to combat various offenses, including shoplifting and anti-social behavior.
