According to a report by the British Broadcasting Corporation on December 21, the Peterborough City Council in the UK has released a quarterly report stating that over 12,000 illegal e-cigarettes and cigarettes were seized.
Trade standard officials confiscated 2,401 illicit e-cigarettes, 9,807 packs of cigarettes, and over 12.5 kilograms of hand-rolled tobacco from the store.
The government is studying measures to tackle the increasing use of e-cigarettes among teenagers, including a potential ban on the use of disposable vaping devices.
Although these products are legal in England, they must meet specific requirements in order to be sold.
The committee outlined that "illegal tobacco" encompasses both genuine tobacco products smuggled into the UK without paying duties, as well as counterfeit products of well-known brands that are illicitly manufactured.
The Cambridge County Council has stated that potential indicators of counterfeit tobacco include unusual taste, low price, and unconventional packaging.
According to data from the Office for National Statistics (ONS), approximately 14% of adults in Peterborough are smokers, which is a similar proportion to that of Cambridge.
