India Proposes Mandatory Anti-Tobacco Advertisements on OTT Platforms
Indian Health Ministry proposes mandatory anti-tobacco ads and disclaimers on OTT platforms to strengthen existing rules.

According to a report from Devdiscourse on September 21, the Indian Ministry of Health has recently released a draft amendment to the anti-tobacco rules for Over-The-Top (OTT) platforms, proposing mandatory broadcast of anti-tobacco health advertisements and disclaimers on OTT platforms. The draft amendment requires non-skippable 30-second health advertisements to be played at the beginning and middle of each movie or show, and static health warnings to be displayed during scenes depicting smoking. These proposals aim to strengthen existing anti-tobacco regulations.


The draft regulation, known as "The Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products (Advertisement and Regulation of Trade, Production, Supply, and Distribution) Amendment Rules 2024," aims to amend the rules introduced last year, which made India the first country to implement such anti-tobacco measures on OTT platforms. The draft regulation is currently open to the public for feedback, with a deadline of October 13th.
