Indonesian Government Implements Ban on Tobacco Sales Near Schools
The Indonesian government bans the sale of cigarettes and e-cigarettes near schools and children's playgrounds to reduce underage smoking.

According to a report from Lifestyle.Bisnis on July 29, the Indonesian government has banned vendors from selling cigarettes and e-cigarettes around schools and children's play areas.

This regulation, outlined in Article 434 of the Government Regulation No. 28 of 2024, imposes a ban on the sale of tobacco and e-cigarette products by the government of Indonesia. The aim of this law is to reduce the number of underage smokers in Indonesia.

The regulation states that "no one is allowed to sell tobacco and e-cigarette products within 200 meters of educational institutions and children's playgrounds." In addition, the regulation also prohibits convenience stores and corner shops from selling tobacco products to individuals under the age of 21 and pregnant women.

Furthermore, the law also prohibits the retail sale of single cigarettes, with the exception of cigars and e-cigarette products.

The government has also stipulated that convenience stores and small retailers are not allowed to display tobacco and e-cigarette products in places where customers enter and exit the store or pass by frequently.

Currently, the smoking rate in Indonesia is on the rise. According to the Ministry of Health's 2023 Health Survey (SKI) data, the estimated number of smokers in Indonesia has reached 70 million, with 7.4% being smokers aged 10 to 18.

The most significant increase in smoking rates is among adolescents and children. According to the 2019 Global Youth Tobacco Survey (GYTS) data, the smoking rate among students aged 13 to 15 increased from 18.3% in 2016 to 19.2% in 2019. Data from SKI 2023 also shows that the highest percentage of smokers is in the 15 to 19 age group, accounting for 56.5%, followed by the 10 to 14 age group at 18.4%.
