
According to a report by Riau Online on January 11, the Criminal Investigation Special Unit of the Riau Provincial Police Headquarters in Indonesia successfully busted an illicit cigarette trade in Arjuna Street, Pekanbaru Labuh Baru Timur.
The Chief Officer of the Special Criminal Investigation Division of Riau Province, General Nasriadi, has stated that the suspect in this operation is JS, a seller who sourced illegal cigarettes from Java Island and Bintan Island. A total of 50 cases of cigarettes, with each case containing 80 packs, were seized in this operation, amounting to a total of 40,000 illegal cigarette packs. These cigarettes were intended to be sold in the Pekanbaru area.
Chief inspector Nasriadi further stated that the confiscated cigarettes did not come with the required warning labels. He emphasized that "the suspect has violated Law No.17 of 2023, namely the Health Law, and may face charges carrying a sentence of up to 5 years imprisonment and a fine of Rp 500 million (approximately $35,000).
This successful operation highlights the determination of the police in Riau Province, Indonesia, to combat illegal cigarette trading.
