The Challenge of Controlling Illegal Tobacco Distribution in South Sulawesi
Illegal tobacco circulation remains rampant in South Sulawesi province, Indonesia, with no illegal tobacco factories discovered, according to health police.

According to an article reported by Indonesian media outlet Mataram on January 10th, the Health Police of South Sulawesi Province in Indonesia stated that there is a high volume of illegal tobacco circulation in the province, but no illegal tobacco factories have been found yet.

 

The Chief of the Health Police, Zaenal Mustakim, has stated that the rampant circulation of illegal tobacco is due to its low price. In order to curb its circulation, they will continue their policies of ongoing crackdowns on illegal tobacco distribution, as well as conducting campaigns and operations to eradicate illegal tobacco in various regions.

 

Mustakim pointed out that although they successfully confiscated a large amount of illegal tobacco in 2023, the distribution of illegal tobacco in the region remains widespread. Mustakim believes that due to the high cost of legal tobacco, people are more inclined to choose the cheaper illegal tobacco. He emphasized that South Sulawesi Province is a tobacco-producing area, and controlling the circulation of illegal tobacco remains challenging as people prefer finished tobacco products.
