Maldives President Announces Nationwide Ban on E-Cigarettes and Products

The Maldives President announces nationwide ban on e-cigarettes and related products, effective November 15, 2024, following public demand.

According to Edition on October 14th, President of Maldives Mohamed Muizzu announced through Twitter that e-cigarettes and related products will be completely banned nationwide. He instructed relevant departments to implement these changes on two specific dates.

The statement declares that as of November 15, 2024, the import of all e-cigarette products and device components will be considered illegal. Additionally, as of December 15, 2024, the use, possession, production, sale, advertising, and distribution of all e-cigarette products will be completely banned. The president stated that relevant departments have been instructed to implement these decisions.

This decision was made following a large number of requests from parents and healthcare providers who strongly called for the prohibition of e-cigarette use in the Maldives.

After the president's statement, Maldives Attorney General Ahmed Usham stated that amendments to existing laws will be submitted to parliament this week in order to implement the ban.

Wales Passes Law Banning Tobacco Sales to Anyone Born After 2009

The Welsh Parliament (Senedd) has approved new legislation banning tobacco sales to anyone born on or after January 1, 2009. The law, passed on December 9, 2025, also imposes stricter controls on how vapes and nicotine products are advertised and sold. Designed by the UK Government but voted on separately in Wales, the bill passed with 36 votes in favor, two abstentions, and nine against. It grants stronger enforcement powers to Trading Standards to combat illegal tobacco and vape sales.

Trump Signs H.R.5371: FDA to Deploy $200 Million for ENDS Enforcement

President Donald Trump signed the Continuing Appropriations Act, 2026 (H.R.5371) on November 12, Section 772 of Part B—the Agriculture, Rural Development, FDA, and Related Agencies Appropriations Act (S.2256)—requires the FDA to allocate no less than $200 million in tobacco user fees to enforce regulations against illegal e-cigarettes, vapes, and other ENDS products. At least $2 million of this funding supports a federal multi-agency task force targeting products originating from the China.
