Mumbai Police Seizes Illicit E-Cigarettes Worth $8,500 in Shop Raid
Banned e-cigarettes valued at Rs 6.44 lakh ($8,500) were confiscated from a Navi Mumbai shop, with investigations into the supply network ongoing.

On May 4, police officials reported the seizure of banned e-cigarettes worth Rs 644,000 ($8,500) from a shop in Kharghar, Navi Mumbai. Conducted by the Anti Narcotics Cell on May 3, the raid led to an offence being registered under the 2019 Prohibition of Electronic Cigarettes Act. Although no arrests have been made yet, an investigation into the sourcing and supply network of these e-cigarettes is currently underway.

 

E-cigarettes are battery-operated devices that produce aerosol by heating nicotine-containing solutions. Under Indian law, the production, manufacturing, import, export, transport, and sale of e-cigarettes are considered cognizable offences. A first offence is punishable by up to one year in prison and/or a Rs 100,000 ($1,320) fine. Storing e-cigarettes can result in a six-month jail term and/or a Rs 50,000 ($660) fine.
