According to a report from jornaldocomercio on January 16th, tobacco producers in the southern region of South America have already started discussing tobacco prices for the period of 2023/2024.
During a series of meetings held at the headquarters of the Southern Union (Afubra) in South Cruz Sul, Brazil, an agreement was reached with Japan Tobacco International (JTI), setting the tobacco price adjustment at 8%.
However, the tobacco producers' groups representing the Southern Association, the Farsul United Agriculture Federation, the Faesc and Faep Agricultural Federation, as well as the Fetag, Fetaesc, and Fetaep Farmers' Workers Union from South Madeira, Santa Catarina, and Parana, failed to reach an agreement on prices with six other companies. According to the Southern Association, they were unable to meet the producers' expectations of a five percentage point increase in the fluctuation range of production costs.
Marcilio Drescher, President of the Southern Association, has informed that they are expecting to engage in a new round of negotiations with companies that have failed to reach an agreement with producers next week, specifically on January 25th, 2024. This highlights the existing discrepancies in the tobacco industry in Brazil regarding pricing issues, with negotiations ongoing between producers and companies.
