Oklahoma Legislation Takes Action to Protect Youth from E-cigarette Abuse

Oklahoma Legislature prioritizes youth e-cigarette abuse, introducing first nationwide public registration system for FDA-approved products.

According to the American media Tulsaworld, Oklahoma lawmakers have prioritized the issue of youth vaping in response to the e-cigarette abuse problem in the state. House Bill 2511 is the first in the country to establish a public registry system for e-cigarette products, listing all FDA-approved products. The registration system will be officially launched on October 1st by the Oklahoma ABLE Commission.

According to statistics, over 60% of students who use e-cigarettes prefer disposable e-cigarette devices. The market for flavored e-cigarette products has expanded by more than 1500% since 2020, with the majority of these products originating from China. Parents and educators in Oklahoma are calling on the government to come up with solutions to protect young people from the harm caused by these illegal products.

At the same time, the registration system can also help retail businesses in the state comply with all applicable laws. Majority leader of the House, Jon Echols, is pushing a bill numbered House Bill 3971 aimed at strengthening local law enforcement powers, increasing transparency in enforcement, and giving law enforcement officers more authority. Echols said this is an important step in protecting the health of young people and hopes to garner more support from legislators to ensure the bill passes smoothly through the House and ultimately reaches the governor's desk.

Chairwoman Ronda Baker from the House Education Committee has promised, "We are proud of our leadership in combating the black market of e-cigarette products, but more enforcement measures are still needed."
