Manila, Philippines - The former dean of the Philippine College of Physicians issued a warning on Thursday evening stating that the Philippines is in the midst of an "e-cigarette epidemic" affecting children as young as 13 years old.
We are now entering a surge in popularity of electronic cigarettes. We know this surge is real because 40% of Filipino children aged 13 to 15 are already using e-cigarettes," said Maricar Limpin in an interview with The Chief on One News. She lamented that there are even more teenagers using e-cigarettes compared to older adults, but did not cite any specific figures.
Dr. Lin Bin, a pulmonologist and anti-tobacco advocate, stated that popularity of e-cigarettes begins in early life. He added that flavor restrictions have been lifted in e-cigarette legislation, which previously only allowed tobacco and menthol flavors.
Limpin spoke in a mix of Filipino and English saying, "They say that as long as the taste is not appealing to children, but there are so many that are appealing to children, so this is very difficult.
She also warned that research suggests that people who vape are "twice as likely" to smoke, four times as likely to drink alcohol, and five times as likely to use illegal drugs.
Limpin stated that they will continue to oppose the vape bill that went into effect on Monday and will raise questions to the Supreme Court.
