Polish Parliament Passes Proposal to Ban Flavored Tobacco Products
Polish parliament's health committee passes proposal to ban flavored heated tobacco products in line with EU directive.

According to Portalsamorzadowy on February 19th, the Health Committee of the Polish Parliament has approved a proposal to ban the sale of heated tobacco products with flavorings.

On the 19th, the bill aimed at enforcing EU directives was passed by the health committee with a vote of 17 in favor, 2 against, and 2 abstentions. The committee made no changes to the proposal prepared by the health department. If the law is approved for implementation, manufacturers and sellers will have nine months to adapt to the new regulations.

Deputy Health Minister Wojciech Konieczny explained to lawmakers that the stipulated nine-month transition period is necessary because the Office of Chemical Affairs requires six months to provide opinions on the products intended for sale.

According to data from the European Commission, sales of heated tobacco products have increased by over 2000% in recent years, with a market share of 3.33% currently. The European Commission points out that the market environment has undergone a "substantial change" and is calling for regulations to be implemented at the EU level to remove exemptions on the use of characterizing flavors in heated tobacco products.

The Polish Chamber of Deputies will further discuss the proposal at a plenary session on February 20th.
