The Basel Canton Parliament is pushing for a ban on the sale of disposable e-cigarettes.
The government is inclined to take a less restrictive approach to deal with the proposal.
Other states and the federal government are also discussing similar bans.
According to Swiss media reports on Wednesday, the Basel cantonal parliament is exploring the possibility of banning the sale of disposable e-cigarettes, and has forwarded the relevant proposal to the government for consideration. The parliament has only put forward this viewpoint in a non-binding form known as a "motion.
The government of Basel-Landschaft previously stated that they hoped to receive the proposal in a less binding manner, as any state-level ban could potentially contradict higher-level federal laws. This viewpoint was supported by the administrative authorities of Basel-Landschaft.
Meanwhile, the parliaments of Valais and Vaud cantons have decided to ban the sale of disposable e-cigarettes, while discussions on a similar ban are underway at the federal level. The government of Basel canton plans to temporarily monitor developments at the federal level.
Despite this, the Basel cantonal parliament still voted 62 in favor, 28 against, and 1 abstention to submit the proposal in the form of a motion. Christian People's Party (EVP) member Christoph Hochuli initially proposed this suggestion as a motion, and he expressed approval of this decision.
