According to a report from Extra on August 11, four lawmakers in Paraguay have proposed a bill to ban the consumption of e-cigarettes, regardless of whether they contain nicotine.
If passed, the bill will also prohibit the production, importation, distribution, sale, or promotion of e-cigarettes within Paraguay.
This proposal was initiated by lawmakers Carlos Godoy, Alejandro Aguilera, Néstor Castellano, and Esteban Samaniego.
Representative Aquilera compared e-cigarettes to traditional cigarettes, calling cigarettes a "vice that may only be picked up in adulthood.
For example, teenagers rarely pick up a cigarette and light it in front of their parents, as smoking is considered a taboo behavior. However, today we see teenagers starting to develop the habit of smoking at a young age through e-cigarettes.
The proposal states that e-cigarette use is already regulated in 21 regions in the Americas, while sales of e-cigarettes are banned in eight countries, including Argentina, Brazil, Uruguay, and Brazil.
In addition, Paraguay is one of the 14 countries without any form of regulatory or prohibition measures.
The proposal also includes confiscation and destruction of products as well as shutting down stores that do not comply with the law.
Aquilara mentioned that the project will be submitted to the Health Committee and a public hearing will be held this week or next week to convene the Ministry of Health, the public, and sales and importers in order to "develop measures that are beneficial to national public health.
