On January 31, the Zoning, Neighborhoods, and Development Committee of Milwaukee, Wisconsin will consider an ordinance that would temporarily suspend "issuance of occupancy permits to establishments selling electronic cigarettes and devices" for six months.
The proposed legislation states that "the city recognizes the proliferation of businesses selling electronic cigarettes and devices, particularly in concentrated areas, may have a negative impact on public health, safety, and welfare. Therefore, the city has deemed it timely and necessary to conduct a thorough review of businesses selling electronic cigarettes and their devices.
The proposed ordinance was introduced by Ald. Jonathan Brostoff, Ald. Marina Dimitrijevic, and Ald. Mark Borkowski, and is set to be valid until August 1, 2023.
Bruce Torre, speaking to the Milwaukee Record, said, "The recent explosion at an e-cigarette shop has garnered widespread social attention and raised many questions. We need to step back and assess how best to move forward together, which is why we will be presenting this at tomorrow's committee. We will take the time to evaluate our options and present the best plan for advancing our community and city.
The next regular session of the city council is scheduled to take place on Tuesday, February 7th.
