Rising Popularity of Nicotine Products Among Finnish Teenagers

Finnish study shows rising popularity of nicotine-containing tobacco products among teenagers despite decreasing smoking rates.

According to a report by Pledge Times on August 8th, a recent study by the Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare (THL) revealed that while the smoking rate among teenagers has decreased, new tobacco products containing nicotine are becoming increasingly popular.

The survey has been conducted every four years since 1995. The respondents to the questionnaire are ninth-grade students in Finland who are at least 16 years old.

A study has shown that nicotine pouches and e-cigarettes are now more common among high school students than traditional cigarettes. 31% of boys and 17% of girls reported having tried nicotine pouches.

In comparison, a smaller proportion of individuals have tried snuff, with 26% of boys and 13% of girls having experimented with it.

The investigation also revealed that 7% of boys and 3% of girls frequently use nasal snuff. The proportion of girls using nicotine pouches is the same as nasal snuff, but as many as 11% of boys stated that they use nicotine pouches daily.

The popularity of e-cigarettes has also surpassed that of traditional cigarettes. Forty percent of high school freshmen say they have tried e-cigarettes, up from 34% five years ago.

In addition, 9% of boys and 13% of girls use e-cigarettes on a daily basis.

Only 6% of boys and 4% of girls smoke traditional cigarettes daily.

Hounslow Crackdown Seizes £33,000 of Illegal Vapes and Combustible Cigarettes

Hounslow Council’s Trading Standards team, working with Metropolitan Police units, conducted test purchases across the borough and found seven premises selling illegal tobacco.
