Sweden: First Smoke-Free Country in Europe Thanks to Controversial "Snus"
Sweden becomes Europe's first smoke-free country as controversial alternative product 'snus' reduces smoking rates to 5.2%.

Sweden has become the first smoke-free country in Europe, thanks to the circulation of a controversial alternative product in its local market.

 

The Swedish government has stated that currently, one in every seven individuals uses a moist tobacco pouch called "snus", placing it underneath the upper lip. This product has significantly contributed to the decline in the number of smokers, with the smoking population ratio dropping to just 5.2% last year.

Responsible Vaping Ireland (RVI), an Irish vape retailers’ group, has released a policy paper urging Ireland to swiftly introduce Revenue-issued tax stamps on vaping products to strengthen enforcement of the E-Liquid Products Tax (EPT) and to tackle tax evasion and the illicit market. Provisional Department of Finance figures show €1.3 million collected in November and December 2025; at that pace, annualised receipts would be €7.8 million, below the government’s projected €17 million.

According to UNN, law enforcement in Ukraine’s Khmelnytskyi region disrupted a group accused of selling illegally produced nicotine-containing mixtures and e-cigarette e-liquids without licenses or permits. The Prosecutor General’s Office said the overall value of the seized items exceeds UAH 12 million (about US$276,000). Haypp Group announced that net sales for October–December 2025 rose 15% year-on-year to SEK 1,052.2 million, or 19% in constant currency terms. The company recorded 28% volume growth in the nicotine pouch category during the quarter. The number of orders increased to 1.34 million, and active consumers rose to 630,000, marking the highest level in the company’s history. CEO Gavin O’Dowd said the company’s accelerating topline performance in the US and UK positions it for a strong 2026.
