According to a report in the Bangkok Post, the Thai Ministry of Health continues to oppose the use of electronic cigarettes, citing concerns over their impact on consumer health, with more than half of users believed to be young people.
The Minister of Public Health, Anutin Charnvirakul, spoke at a national conference on tobacco and public health held in Bangkok on August 29, emphasizing the need to continue the ban on importing electronic cigarettes in order to protect young people from the health risks associated with vaping.
According to a survey conducted last year by the National Statistics Office, more than half of the approximately 80,000 electronic cigarette users in Thailand are aged between 15 and 24.
This clearly shows that e-cigarettes have created new smokers, especially among young people, and increasing international research has found that vaping has negative effects on the brains of young people," said Chanwiraluck Chernvirakul.
Charnvirakul stated that based on the experiences of other countries, a ban on electronic cigarettes is the most effective measure to control their use.
He added that concerns over illegal trade will be addressed by continuing to "crack down on the smuggling of electronic cigarettes into the country.
Charnvirakul's comment was made in relation to the legalization of vaping products in Thailand. Earlier this year, the Ministry of Digital Economy and Society established a working group to explore the possibility of legalizing e-cigarettes as an alternative for smokers.
