Growing Use of E-cigarettes among Teens in New York, Failure of Flavor Bans?
Teenagers in New York are increasingly using e-cigarettes due to poor coping mechanisms, despite flavor tobacco sales being banned.

According to a report from The Chronicle on November 9th, a teacher from a high school in New York state has raised concerns over the increasing severity of teenage e-cigarette use, attributing this phenomenon to their poor psychological coping mechanisms.

According to an anonymous teacher, despite the enactment of a ban on flavored cigarettes, she still observes students using e-cigarettes on a daily basis.

The state regulations prohibit the sale of flavored tobacco products that have not received marketing authorization from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Retailers, on the other hand, are only allowed to sell cigarette products with no flavor, tobacco flavor, mint flavor, or wintergreen flavor. Furthermore, these products cannot be sold to individuals under the age of 21.

The New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, the New York Health Foundation, and the CATCH Global Foundation have partnered to launch the CATCH My Breath initiative, aimed at preventing excessive use of e-cigarettes among teenagers. The initiative provides free education and training on preventing e-cigarette use, along with resources for parents, in order to promote the health of middle and high school students.
