Truck Driver Arrested for Smuggling 1.56 Million Cigarettes
According to a report by Malaysian media outlet Sinar Harian on November 5th, a truck driver in northern Malaysia's Johor state risked transporting 1.56 million contraband cigarettes in order to earn a reward of 550 Malaysian Ringgit (equivalent to about 118 US dollars).
According to the director of customs, Wan Jaafar Abdul Salam, it has been reported that they carried out a search on the said truck and discovered smuggled goods worth RM 144,000 (approximately $30,000) with a total tax amounting to approximately RM 1 million (approximately $210,000).
The suspect has been arrested by the Royal Malaysian Customs Department (Jabatan Kastam Diraja Malaysia, Kastam) in the Kelantan state.
