Turkey Seizes Record Number of E-cigarettes and Cocaine
Turkey successfully seized 275,520 e-cigarettes and 35.2 kg of cocaine in a raid at Istanbul's Ambarlı port, according to Turkey's Mynet media.

According to a report by Turkish media outlet Mynet on November 28th, the Turkish Ministry of Commerce successfully seized 275,520 e-cigarettes and 35.2 kilograms of cocaine in an operation at Ambarlı Port in Istanbul.

Turkish Minister of Commerce, Ömer Bolat, praised the recent e-cigarette seizure as the largest in the country's history, according to a statement.

 

He emphasized that as the Ministry of Commerce, they will continue to combat those who attempt to harm public health and damage the national economy, and they will never give the green light to illegal trade and drugs.

According to Interfax-Ukraine, a study conducted by market research firm Kantar Ukraine at the request of major tobacco companies found that more than 93% of vape products in Ukraine did not fully comply with regulatory requirements. The research examined product categories, brand distribution and consumer purchasing channels, showing that pod systems and disposable vapes represent major segments of the market, while offline retail remains the dominant purchasing channel. The findings highlight ongoing compliance challenges in Ukraine’s vape market.

The article argues that after the U.S. expanded federal oversight of nicotine products in 2022, some manufacturers began using nicotine-like compounds such as 6-methyl-nicotine that may fall outside existing definitions. Researchers cited by WIRED said some nicotine analogs could be more potent than traditional nicotine, although human health impacts remain unclear. Spanish newspaper El Confidencial interviewed Fred Monteiro, Regional Director for Americas and Europe at British American Tobacco (BAT). Monteiro said BAT supports setting regulatory limits for nicotine products but opposes Spain’s proposed 0.99mg nicotine-per-pouch limit, arguing that such a restriction could affect adult smokers’ transition to alternatives. He said nicotine regulation should be based on scientific evidence and harm reduction principles. Monteiro also said smoke-free products now account for around 25% of BAT’s Americas and Europe business and nearly 30% of its Europe business
