2Firsts, December 2025 – Two shops on Station Road in Taunton have been ordered to close for three months after police and Trading Standards officers discovered illegal tobacco and vape products worth around £50,000.
Taunton Market and Top Market were inspected by Trading Standards officers, police and tobacco detection dogs, who uncovered significant quantities of illegal products on the premises.
Alex Fry, operations manager at the Heart of the South West Trading Standards Service, said combating the supply of illegal tobacco and vapes is a high priority, helping to protect communities and support law-abiding businesses.
At Top Market, officers discovered 12,000 cigarettes, 2.5kg of tobacco and almost 1,000 vapes in a concealed rear room in July. A follow-up inspection two months later revealed additional illegal products, with seized goods valued at more than £20,000.
At Taunton Market, more than 35,000 cigarettes, 6.5kg of tobacco and 540 vapes were seized from an associated flat in July. In September, a vehicle linked to the premises was intercepted delivering tobacco products, leading to the seizure of a further 10,260 cigarettes, 2.5kg of tobacco and 84 vapes. Total seizures connected to the shop were estimated to be worth nearly £30,000.
Taunton Magistrates Court ruled that closing both retail premises was necessary to prevent further criminal activity.
