Warning: Indonesia to Ban Smoking in Social Media Content
Indonesian Health Ministry warns celebrities and influencers against showcasing smoking behavior in social media content ahead of potential ban.

According to a report by Suara on May 28th, the Indonesian Ministry of Health (Kemenkes) has warned actors and internet celebrities to refrain from showcasing smoking in their YouTube podcasts or social media content. This is because once the proposed Government Health Regulation Bill No. 17 of 2023 is passed, such behavior will be prohibited.

Benget Saragih, the head of the Department of Non-Communicable Disease Prevention and Control at the Ministry of Health, stated that the government is currently working to reduce the number of child smokers in Indonesia. Banning tobacco advertising on social media platforms such as YouTube, Instagram, and TikTok is believed to be an effective way to prevent children from being exposed to smoking.

Due to the fact that artists and internet personalities are often watched and imitated by children, the authorities have warned them against displaying smoking behavior on social media.

We did not prohibit them (internet celebrities and artists) from smoking, that's not a problem. However, we do not allow them to display it publicly as we want to discourage novice smokers.

Bongette stated that if artists and internet celebrities continue to display smoking scenes in their social media content, especially after the RPP Act is signed, the government will take firm action through the communication and information departments to remove those contents or prevent them from being accessed or viewed.

Everything is not allowed. In the future, we will establish a system in which if such content is found, we will directly recommend to the communications and information department to delete it. If there are smoking scenes in movies, they will also be blurred out.

Starting September 1st, Texas banned the sale of THC-containing e-cigarettes. Violators face up to $4,000 in fines and one year in jail. Supporters say it helps keep marijuana vapes out of teens' hands. But opponents fear it will push people to dangerous alternatives. Some businesses, like Gruene Botanicals, argue that these vapes are important for treating chronic pain and PTSD, and a total ban could lead consumers to the black market.
