Australia Leading Medical Institutions Support E-Cigarette Legislation Reform
Leading Australian medical institutions support Health Minister Mark Butler's e-cigarette reform to protect young people from harm.

According to a report from miragenews on March 21, several leading medical institutions in Australia have unanimously supported a legislative reform measure on e-cigarettes announced by Health Minister Mark Butler today. These institutions include more than ten organizations such as the Australian Cancer Council, medical associations, public health groups, the Australian Lung Foundation, and the Heart Foundation.

The Minister of Health announced today the "2024 Therapeutic Products and Other Legislative Amendments (e-cigarette Reform) Act." The act aims to protect young people from the harms of e-cigarettes by prohibiting the manufacture, advertising, supply, and commercial ownership of non-therapeutic disposable e-cigarettes.

According to data from the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW), nearly 60% of e-cigarette users are under the age of 30. Most concerning is that over 60% of young people aged 15 to 24 are trying e-cigarettes for the first time. Public health and medical experts point out that the ban on over-the-counter disposable e-cigarettes announced today can help change this trend. Medical professionals also believe that this measure will benefit smokers by helping them quit smoking under the guidance of healthcare professionals.

Terry Slevin, CEO of the Public Health Association, is urging all lawmakers to seize this opportunity to protect the health of young Australians.

The global tobacco and e-cigarette industries from multiple countries are determined to stop the passage of this legislation at all costs. If this bill is passed, the world's attention will be focused on Australia, which will significantly reduce the use of e-cigarettes.
