Biden Faces Pressure to Ban Flavored Tobacco to Appeal African American Voters
US President Joe Biden faces increasing pressure to ban flavored tobacco to avoid alienating African-American voters ahead of the 2024 elections.

US President Joe Biden is reportedly facing mounting pressure as the 2024 elections approach, with a need to avoid alienating African-American voters and breaking the stalemate. In response to this, top Democratic officials are strongly advocating for a proposal to ban various flavored tobacco products.

Last month, due to political opposition and warnings of potential backlash from African-American voters who had already turned away from the president, the Biden administration has slowed down the nationwide ban on menthol cigarettes. It is anticipated that the announcement of this regulation, which was originally scheduled for January, will now be made in March of this year.

US President Joe Biden is increasingly under pressure to prevent alienating African American voters in the upcoming 2024 election, as his proposal to ban various flavored tobacco products is currently at a stalemate. At the end of last year, the Biden administration hesitated to implement a nationwide ban on menthol cigarettes, facing backlash from the political sphere and warnings of potential dissatisfaction among African American voters who may be impacted by this issue at the polls.

However, more than 20 Democratic-led states, including California, believe that the health benefits of banning flavored tobacco outweigh the potential political risks that Biden may face during his campaign.

California Attorney General Rob Bonta, leading a coalition, has submitted a statement to the White House, asserting that the present moment is the opportune time to ban flavored tobacco products as a means to reduce cigarette consumption and save lives.

It is worth mentioning that California Governor Gavin Newsom has emerged as a key surrogate for Biden's re-election campaign, actively working to minimize risks for Biden's proposals in the primaries. Recently, a large-scale "menthol cigarette funeral" was held by a group of menthol cigarette supporters on the grounds in front of the White House in the United States.

However, Biden's push for banning menthol cigarettes has also faced considerable criticism as he is simultaneously working towards the decriminalization of marijuana. Nevertheless, senior officials in Biden's administration maintain that banning menthol cigarettes will help Americans gradually break free from their dependency.

US Secretary of Health and Human Services Xavier Becerra has stated that the proposed regulations will help prevent children from becoming the next generation of smokers and aid adult smokers in quitting. Moreover, these regulations are a significant step towards advancing health equity as they can substantially reduce the health disparities caused by tobacco.
