The UK Vaping Industry Association (UKVIA) has welcomed the UK government's decision to intensify regulations on firms selling vapes to underage individuals and trading in illegal vape products. John Dunne, the Director General of UKVIA, expressed support for the move, suggesting fines up to £10,000 per instance for those found guilty of these offenses.
According to Dunne, this move aligns with the UKVIA's calls over the past year to curb illegal youth vaping while acknowledging the benefits of vaping for adults attempting to quit smoking. The UKVIA also advocates for a retail licensing scheme with age verification requirements and robust enforcement by Trading Standards departments nationwide.
Dunne highlighted the need for adequate resourcing for these departments to effectively clamp down on illicit vape sales. Additionally, he stressed the importance of rigorous regulation for nicotine-free vapes to safeguard under 18s. The UKVIA is now pushing for these zero-nicotine vapes to undergo the same testing and registration process as nicotine-containing devices.
