Collective Agreement of BAT Effective from 2023: 2% Wage Raise
The Spanish Official Gazette has registered the collective contract of British American Tobacco, which includes wage increases and remote work policies.

According to a report by the European News Agency on December 26th, the Official Gazette of Spain (BOE) has published and registered the collective agreement of British American Tobacco (BAT). The agreement will be valid from July 1, 2023 to March 31, 2026. It stipulates that employees will receive a 2% wage increase from April 1, 2022, to be distributed retroactively.

According to BOE records, a disposable amount equivalent to 0.35% of the base salary will be paid in the same remuneration statement, retroactive to April 2022. This amount is non-consolidatable.

In addition, during the duration of this new agreement, a 1% increase in basic salary for employees in D-level positions and above has been specified from April 1, 2023, to March 31, 2026. As for employees in B and C-level positions, their salary adjustments will be based on the date of their eligibility to participate in the Annual Salary Review (ASR) system. These adjustments will take effect on April 1 of the following year.

Therefore, despite reaching a negotiated salary adjustment, it has also been agreed within the duration of this contract to implement a new salary review system called Annual Salary Review (ASR) in addition to the basic salary increase schedule. This system will operate within the company globally and will be effective from the date of signing this agreement until its expiration.

As a result of this new supplementary salary review system, a new subsidy called the "Annual Performance Evaluation Subsidy" has been established, which will be applicable from April 1, 2022 to March 31, 2026.

Regarding remote work, this multinational company's new collective contract states that remote work only applies to office staff and specifies that employees can work remotely for two days per week throughout the year. However, in July, under exceptional circumstances, remote work can be extended to three days, and in August, employees can work remotely for the entire workweek, which consists of five days.

Malaysia to Ban Vaping Nationwide in Phases, Starting with “Open-System” Devices
Malaysia will roll out a phased nationwide vape ban, beginning with reusable “open-system” devices that can be manually refilled, before expanding to all vape products. The government is finalising a Cabinet paper and reviewing current controls. Public health groups back the move, while industry bodies warn a blanket ban could drive the trade underground. The vape market has grown rapidly, and cross-border links with Singapore—where enforcement has intensified—are drawing scrutiny.
