Recently, according to a report by BBC, a wide range of hidden spaces has revealed an underground market for tobacco trading. During a raid in Huddersfield, UK, the police discovered illegal tobacco worth thousands of pounds.
The police have discovered 144 packs of cigarettes and 231 illegal e-cigarettes behind a false wall in a store, along with several large packages of tobacco hidden behind camouflage panels. All illegal items will be destroyed.
However, this is not the end of a series of crackdowns conducted in the region over the past 12 months. A joint operation by the police and trade regulatory authorities has revealed that profits made from the illegal sale of tobacco and e-cigarettes could be used to fund organized crime.
Mark Pattinson argues that selling illegal cigarettes may not be as harmful as other types of crime, but there is ample evidence to suggest that the money generated from illegal tobacco sales may be directly used to fund organized crime.
Parkinson's officer emphasizes that these illegal products may pose a greater threat to public health due to the lack of regulation and testing.
"Therefore, restricting their sales is particularly important," he mentioned, as shop owners attempted to conceal illegal products behind a fake wall, with access to this hidden area facilitated through a disguised electric door.
The spokesperson for the police also stated that following the discovery of an illegal tobacco collection worth over £100,000 in Dewsbury last October, the smuggled goods were found hidden in various unusual places. These included a flip wall behind a bathroom mirror and a concealed cabinet behind a fake fuse board.
